Could This Be Dubai’s Best Brunch?

Dubai residents love nothing more than a good brunch, be they brilliantly boozy or generous/virtuous. Ok, I’ll admit the former is particularly popular.

As more restaurants across the city get their brunch game on, I’ve decided to rebel against all that ‘New Year, New Me’ hogwash and find you the most pitch-perfect of all brunches. After all, no one wants to see in the weekend with a stale bread, or break the bank on a watered-down Spritz cocktail.

Oh and trust me, I won’t be needing any of that Veritaserum to tell you that I WAS NOT disappointed. As promoted, MATTO‘s newly launched brunch, Via Del MATTO, is not for the faint-hearted.

Think of all the sexy carbohydrates getting together in one room: wood-fired pizza, pasta, Parmesan risotto wheels, fresh homemade breads, cheese, cheese, and more cheese, Italian street food, desserts, and so much more.

MATTO’s Italian-street-food-inspired brunch is on every Friday, serving free flow of pasta, risotto, lasagna and pizza from both the open-space kitchen to the extensive live food stations. So without any further ado, prepare to be transported to the busy streets of Italy as the smell of wood-fired pizza fills the air, paving the way for a gastronomically tantalizing meal created in a kitchen worthy of Nonna’s approval.

True to the Mediterranean way of life, MATTO immerses their guests in a truly Italian experience unlike any other.

Eat Until You Can Eat No More (Then A Little More) – AED 180
Dining + Soft Drinks

Vino e Birra – AED 250
Dining + House Wines & Beers

Pacco MATTO – AED 320
Dining + Selected Pouring Spirits, Cocktails & Prosecco

And if you’re one of those who worship the Saint of all Sicilian foods, cannoli, then you are in for a treat. Wash them down with an espresso, and you’ve found yourself the perfect way to end this bottomless brunch.

“People work so hard in Dubai they come to rely upon brunch as a chill come-down after a tiring week” said Giordana Attilio, Head of Marketing at MATTO.

So could this be Dubai’s Best Brunch? Here’s how you can judge for yourself: Go straight, take a right, sharp left. Benvenuti in Via Del MATTO.

The MATTO Brunch / Every Friday from 12.30pm until 4.30pm

REVEALED: Beirut’s Best Hot Chocolates

Hungry, thirsty and almost mythical, Hungry Unicorn toured and figured out the Best Hot Chocolates there are to slurp during those chilly Beirut nights…

In her search to find the best hot chocolates to suit all tastes, she tried over 13 drinks from supermarket ready-made stir-ins, coffee shops, cafes and restaurants; these 5 shortlists impressed with their well-balanced sweetness and satisfyingly silky texture.

So if you’re feeling really decadent and fancy (as you should), scroll down this short list and let us know how you like it.

SURPRISINGLY, Starbucks’ Fudge Hot Chocolate ranked FIRST!
Home to the infamous mythical creatures, Unicorn Coffee House’s Hot Chocolate ranked second.
Coming in third, Beirut’s latest coffee house and kitsch retail corner, Home Sweet Home’s hot chocolate.
You can’t have a Best Hot Chocolates list without the international staple touch of Angelina’s. It comes in fourth on Hungry Unicorn’s list.
Last but not least, Urbanista’s hot chocolate ranks fifth, keeping their legacy “where the food is fresh and conversations are always brewing” alive.

That’s all folks. We’ve tried some watery, despicable hot potions who put boiled hot rats to shame… But we’re not the kind of pair that’ll rant about it. Unless you want us to?! As a matter of fact, Beirut’s Worst Hot Chocolates has a nice sound to it.. Lol!

The restaurant showcases the core flavors of every ingredient by using the best products and composes true, pure and natural tastes. With beautiful views over the Amstel River, the Private Dining Room of Bord’Eau is the ideal location to dine in an intimate setting. This unique experience starts with a special selection of amuses followed by a menu with the signature dishes of Bord’Eau composed by Executive Chef Richard van Oostenbrugge.

Refined and great, or refined (culinary) violence is the best way to describe this wonderful restaurant. The chef pleases his demanding audience with noble products in dishes that fit perfectly into the zeitgeist. Ready for a culinary eye-opener? Then go for the Famous apple dessert: reconstructed apple with blown sugar a core of apple sorbet, apple seeds of chocolate, a tart with marinated granny smith and caramel, a delicious hit!

Stranger Things-Inspired Milkshake is Now a Thing.

There’s a Stranger Things – inspired Milkshake in Dubai and my heart just can’t keep it together.

The “freaks” at Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes Dubai have created another monster.

Eggos & edible Christmas lights make this a FREAKSHAKE.

As the spookiest time of the year arrives, and Netflix series Stranger Things has aired for its second season, the NYC import that specializes in spectacular yet very, very peculiar milkshakes has launched a limited-edition shake to mark the occasion, The Stranger Shake.

This monstrous ice cream, caramel, EGGOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, whipped cream & sour candy delight will be your only weapon to fight the Dubaigorgons, and will be available at Black Tap until Saturday November 11.

So. Should I stay or should I go?

When and why did we start spending half of our income on truffle fries and avocado oil?

In the midst of planning my overdue summer vacation, I scroll down my contact list, hunting a few people I dare call “foodies”, in hopes of getting some recommendations of places where they dined and wined in Barcelona; luckily, the biblical list forms quickly.

Some of these people work in online marketing. They are, in the gastronomical realm, inhabitants. Their leisure time and shy unrestricted income, however, is devoted almost exclusively to food and restaurants.

Most of them will say “I’m not a foodie, I just eat what I like”. Yes, I know. You’re probably thinking this sounds exactly like when a hipster claims he’s not actually one. The cliché cracks them up.

But God knows how I feel when I hear the word foodie. I think Zomato, TripAdvisor and shit of the sort. I don’t want to be lumped in with Zomato though, the team here in Beirut are friends. Nonetheless, denying you’re a foodie is like shying away from the fact that even your phone’s screen saver is a close-up photo of a pile of “truffle crispy potato allumettes”.

“For years, the word “Foodie” was used sparingly. A populist food critic might have been described as a “foodie.” A gustatory pleasure seeker with the time and money to invest in obscure cooking methods, niche coffee roasting techniques, and not-to-be-missed meals might have earned the distinction too. It wasn’t a compliment; it was just a descriptor. It was an unpretentious way to categorize a growing but still relatively small group of people. Over time, the word has undergone an all-too-familiar transformation, bubbling up to a point of ubiquity that has stripped the word of any semblance of meaning. On a good day — or bad, depending on how you look at it — most people would qualify as a “foodie” to someone. The net the word casts is just too wide.” – The Washington Post

There is of course, people in today’s world to whom food is a solemn cultural quest. And yes, being an “epicurean” has unquestionably become an outlining fascination among Millennials. It’s not soccer or Xbox. It’s more like K-Pop. Just like the music of, say, PSY blasting off in a Parisian club, food is observed as a genuine choice for a pastime.

Food’s revolution from a boring hobby to today’s “sensation” has occurred extremely fast. The concurrent rise of Instagram and Snapchat deserves a share of the praise, but none of this would’ve happened without the popular uprising in fine dining. Typically, you’re either the type “I eat to live” or “live to eat”. Nowadays, you’re likely to add another category, the “I live to eat, and Instagram it” one.

So is being a “Foodie”, a twenty-tens’ epidemic? Let me know what you think.
